what good does philanthropy do?
Philanthropy, a Greek word that translates to “love for mankind,” refers to charitable giving and acts that promote the common good. Philanthropic acts can include monetary and physical donations, volunteering time, educating, and other forms of altruism. In 2022, Americans gave almost $500 billion in charitable donations to more than 1 million nonprofit organizations. These organizations employ millions of people and serve even more, collectively working to better their communities and the world.
what good will you do?
In this Honors Collegium course, we study the philosophy and practice of philanthropy, analyzing its role as a common good in American communities with a specific focus on Los Angeles. Thanks to the generosity of local donors, you will have a rare opportunity and privilege to decide how to award $100,000 among local nonprofit organizations that foster arts and culture, civil rights and human services, environmental and animal interests, and health and wellness.
Since the course was established in 2012, Philanthropy as Civic Engagement course members have awarded $1,000,000 to 35 Los Angeles area nonprofits.
